Criteria for Accreditation

Institutions must demonstrate that they meet the criteria for accreditation and assumed practices.

Effective September 1, 2025, HLC’s revised criteria will be in place:

Criterion 1. Mission

The institution’s mission is clear and articulated publicly; it guides the institution’s operations.

Criterion 2. Integrity: Ethical and Responsible Conduct

In fulfilling its mission, the institution acts with integrity; its conduct is ethical and responsible.

Criterion 3. Teaching and Learning for Student Success

The institution demonstrates responsibility for the quality of its educational programs, learning environments and support services, and it evaluates their effectiveness in fulfilling its mission. The rigor and quality of each educational program is consistent regardless of modality, location or other differentiating factors.

Criterion 4. Sustainability: Institutional Effectiveness, Resources and Planning

The institution’s resources, structures, policies, procedures and planning enable it to fulfill its mission, improve the quality of its educational programs, and respond to future challenges and opportunities.

On November 9 – 10, 2026, Indiana University Indianapolis will host an on-site HLC Peer Review Team to confirm that the University meets the Criteria for Accreditation and other HLC requirements, is engaged in continuous institutional improvement, and complies with U.S Department of Education requirements.

As a component of the Comprehensive Evaluation, Indiana University Indianapolis will complete an Assurance Argument in addition to materials providing evidence of compliance with HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation. Teams are currently being assembled by Criteria to complete the Assurance Argument. Timeline and other information will be forthcoming to the campus community.
