Susan Kahn, Ph.D.
Susan Kahn joined Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis in 1998 as Director of the Urban Universities Portfolio Project, a six-campus national project that produced the first generation of electronic institutional portfolios. She currently serves as IUPUI’s Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Director of the campus’s ePortfolio Initiative. In these roles, she strives to support student and faculty development, to enable students, departments, schools, and the institution to document student learning of key collegiate abilities and skills, and to demonstrate institutional accountability through the annual campus Performance Report and a variety of other reports and studies.
Before joining IUPUI, Dr. Kahn directed a University of Wisconsin System-wide faculty development office that led initiatives focused on effective teaching and learning and on expanding campuses’ capacity to support teaching and learning. She simultaneously served as Senior Academic Planner for the UW System, leading and staffing a wide range of statewide academic initiatives, and as Special Assistant to the system’s Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. She has published, presented, and consulted frequently on faculty development, assessment, and electronic portfolios. A native of New York City, she holds a bachelor’s degree from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin, all in English literature, and enjoys team-teaching the senior capstone seminar in IUPUI’s Department of English each spring.
